Why we built Kapapo
As the number of YouTube channels people follow grows, there's no longer time to watch every video start to finish. Without wanting to miss important content, and without spending hours watching videos, we wanted a way to quickly read what's being said and jump straight to that moment in the video if needed. When we couldn't find anything that did exactly this, we built it ourselves — Kapapo (kapapo.com) was born from this need.
What is Kapapo
A platform that automatically watches videos from the YouTube channels you follow, extracts their transcripts, turns them into short AI-generated summary cards, and presents them in a swipeable feed. If a card doesn't interest you, swipe past it; if it does, "Watch on YouTube" jumps you to the exact summarized moment in the video.
What it offers
- Category-based feed — editor-approved summary cards in categories like sports, news and technology.
- Following feed — see content only from the channels you've added.
- Backlink to the creator — every card links back to the original video, so the YouTuber doesn't lose traffic.
- Web + native mobile app — alongside kapapo.com, a native Android app we built with Flutter, live on Google Play.
- One-click sign-in with Google.
How we built it: technical architecture
The web and API side runs on Next.js 15; in the background there's a Python-based bot layer running on scheduled jobs (APScheduler) — it scans YouTube channels, pulls transcripts, turns them into summary cards through a DeepSeek-powered pipeline, and automatically generates the card image for sharing. As scale grew, we built a separate scraping layer using residential proxies in production to avoid getting caught by YouTube's automated access blocks. On the mobile side we built a separate Flutter app that shares the same API contract (via Bearer token) as the web app, so the experience is consistent across both platforms. The database is MySQL; all site copy and behavior settings are managed from the admin panel — nothing is hardcoded.
Who it's for
We built this for anyone following many YouTube channels without the time to watch them all, who doesn't want to miss the news, and who wants to save time with a "read the summary first, then decide" approach.
Conclusion
Kapapo is an example of both our AI consulting approach and our end-to-end software development (web + mobile together). If you have a similar platform idea, get in touch; if you'd like to try Kapapo, you can reach it at kapapo.com or on Google Play.
